Writing Prompts

Here you’ll find my a growing list of writing prompts for you and your kids. Writing, and using fun writing prompts, supports language and literacy skills but also prompts creativity. Give them to your kids, your students if you’re a SLP, use them yourself, or write together as a family! All of these are writing prompts for fictional stories, unless otherwise noted.

Previous Prompts:

• You find an old, wooden chest. Where did you find it? What’s inside?

• Write a story about an unlikely animal duo.

• Your main character is grumpy. Why is he mad? What will make it better?

• It’s raining and your characters are stuck inside. What will they do next?

• Non-Fiction Option: Write about your favorite childhood memory.

• Prescriptive Non-Fiction Option: Think of something you know how to do really well. Teach us how to do it.

• You find a strange plant growing in your yard. Why is it strange? What will you do?

• Write a story about a pet who has gone missing.

• Look around your house and pick an object. Next, make that object come alive and write a story with it as your main character.
