A few fantastic read aloud books for kids 5-8
As many of you know, The Mouse and the Motorcycle won as the first book to be read aloud in my local book club for struggling and reluctant early readers. It is a classic, and I am so excited to be reading it! But I had to give you a few of the runners up to that pick, and hope you give them a read at home or at school if you haven’t already. They’re all so good, and I hope to feature them in future book clubs.
The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary
A classic for a reason! This is the book that so many of our parents said brought back such joyful memories from their own childhoods.
My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett
Another SLP friend of mine said she and her kids loved this book so much that they read it in one sitting. Now that is a good review!

Mercy Watson by Kate DiCamillo
Mercy Watson got a lot of votes for Book Club too, it was a very close second to The Mouse and the Motorcycle and is still very much worth the read.
Skunk and Badger by Amy Timberlake
This book has beautiful illustrations to go along with the story. It’s an unlikely animal duo who start out clashing and, spoiler alert, grow to be friends.

Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
This is such a good early read aloud! I remember this from my own childhood, and being captivated by the story and committed to learning what becomes of the characters.
