Picture Books List: Books for Practicing “K” (and G)

Here is a list of a few of my favorite books for practicing the /k/ sound and letter at home. Each book comes complete with speech sound word lists for /k/.

As with all my picture book lists, I try to make these sound book lists include only books I have actually read, enjoyed and admire for their writing or illustrations or both.

Stuck by Oliver Jeffers

This is a silly book about a little boy who gets his kite stuck in a tree. He tries throwing a variety of increasingly absurd things up into the tree in an attempt to retrieve it, and it is a hoot to read with kids.

Here are a few of the many /k/ sounds in the book: kite, stuck, knock, cat, ridiculous, can, back, bucket, duck, bicycle (or bike), sink, car, milk, commotion, and could.

/K/ is on every page, teaching of the /k/ and /g/ sounds at the start of the book, and pre-literacy tips from Cass Kim at the end!
